Graham Stevens Reserve Shiraz 2008

Wine Lady wine review Graham Stevens Reserve Shiraz 2008

This outstanding dry red wine is the product of quality estate grown grapes. With a lifetime of experience in the growing vines and wine making in McLaren Vale wine region I selected individual barrels to bring about a wine with majestic fruit /wood complexity. Aged for 15 months in new 300l French oak barrels, this wine has immediate palate acceptability that will be enhanced with further cellaring. Decanting recommended.”

If I read this description in the internet, I am not sure if I would buy the wine; it sounds so ordinary and neutral.. But if you are familiar with any of Graham Stevens wines you know, that this description from the back label of the Reserve Shiraz 2008 brings out the greater value of an extraordinary wine and extraordinary person; because Graham is a passionate man with an attitude that not many people have and he produces wines that are exceptional; all of them. More about Graham you will read in my article about wines from McLaren Flat, here.

Reserve Shiraz 2008 is another wine from Graham Stevens portfolio that got an exclamation mark in my wine journal; to be honest, five of seven wines I tasted during my visit at Graham’s attracted my attention and I had the WOW syndrome during the tasting. You mustn’t miss his wines!

Reserve Shiraz 2008 is an oily, dark ruby wine with black hues. The aroma is very complex and powerful, it gave me an impression of being silky; as silky the aroma can be ;) The bouquet is very concentrated and rich, full of fruits and spices that go perfectly together. You will find there plums, blackberries, blueberries, raisins and dried plums, herbs and spices such as thyme, liquorice and black pepper.

Reserve Shiraz 2008 is a wine with a character with its complexity, richness and elegance. The acidity is strong and lively, body full, fine astringency and rich consistency. The tannins are powerful but integrated, big and smooth. The wine tastes of fruits (blueberries, blackberries, cherries, plums and black currants), herbs and spices (liquorice, white pepper) with a hint of woody flavours (coffee, oak). The finish is very long and lingering with blackberries and hazelnut flavours. This sensous, concentrated and intense wine is a must-try at Graham Stevens’ cellar door.
