The Swinging Malaysian Single Vineyard Shiraz 2010

The Swinging Malaysian Single Vineyard Shiraz 2010 is another wine from the ‘Amazing-Sites’ line wines of portfolio of d’Arenberg. This is also the wine I loved the most of all of the d’Arenberg’s wines I’ve tasted during my trip to Australia earlier this year. It has everything I look in Australian Shiraz from McLaren Vale!

Let’s take a look at my tasting note

The wine in the glass was thick, oily and dark red coloured with some brighter hues towards the edge. The aroma was strong and obvious and made me totally addicted to this wine. In the bouquet I found lots of spices and herbs with intense peppermint and eucalyptus notes; there were also earthy, leathery and woody aromas with a bit of liquorice. I can’t forget to write about fruits – this wine still had lots of fruits! Cherries and black cherries, red currants, plums and blackberries fulfilled the extasy for my nose during the tasting.

In the mouth The Swinging Malaysian Shiraz 2010 was powerful, very harmonious, complex, rich and very spicy. The acidity was fresh and crispy; it did go well will the sweet fruity flavours. Alcohol was warm but not too intense. Beautiful, layered structure with velvety, rounded and smooth tannins. On the palate the wine has showed lots of fruit character – plums, blackberries, sweet blueberries, red currants and cherries. You won’t miss the dark chocolate and intense spicy notes! The finish was lingering and lively with lots of spices, sweet blueberry flavor and a hint of chocolate.

This is a perfect wine for me – beautifully balanced, spicy and fruity at the same time, very complex and smooth. I would say it is a feminine wine, but you need to consider my definition of femininity ;)

The story behind the name ‘The Swinging Malaysian Shiraz’

“Purchased in an era of free love, this vineyard has also done its fair share of swinging! First planted to Shiraz in the 70s, it was grafted to Riesling, but was returned to its origins in 2001. Imported vineyard posts from Malaysia were trialled here but were too weak and had to be replaced.”
