Vintage Fortified Shiraz 2006

Wine Lady dArenberg Vintage Fortified Shiraz 2006

From the first declared vintage in 1928, our fortified wines have been Shiraz based, and the vines that produced the original vintage still provide the grapes for this wine. These old vines are stumpy, gnarled and deep rooted, distinguished by their small bunches of highly coloured and intensely flavoured grapes. Each year, they are heavily hand pruned during winter and subsequently hand-harvested at extreme ripeness in late summer. After being gently crushed, this wine then spends up to two weeks fermenting on skins in traditional ‘headed-down’ open fermenters, before being pressed by our 19th century Coq and Tregoning basket-presses. After pressing, a small amount of fine, fortifying brandy spirit is added, ending fermentation, retaining the sweet fruit richness of the style, d’Arenberg’s Vintage Fortified is then bottled in the same year of vintage.”

Wine Lady dArenberg Vintage Fortified Shiraz 2006

Vintage Fortified Shiraz 2006 is a dark brick red coloured wine with lots of sediments at the bottom of the glass and bottle. It smells of… medicines and brandy ;) and green leaves with a hint of green pepper. The aroma doesn’t seem sweet at all, although there are a lot of black and red fruits in the bouquet.

In the mouth Vintage Fortified Shiraz 2006 is very sweet, full, rich and developed. It reminds me of a sweet cherry with lots of sugar ;) With viscous consistency, solid structure and cloying sweetness, the wine has generous alcoholic strength and lacks some stronger acidity. On the palate there are fruit flavous: cherries, dried plums and figs with almonds and spices (strong liquorice). Vintage Fortified Shiraz 2006 has rounded, big and a bit woody tannins. The finish is syrupy with almonds and candy-like aftertaste.
