One of the best known Wirra Wirra’s wines, Church Block, has been produced for last 40 years. The Church Block 2012 vintage has been made to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the blend. Also, what’s interesting, there is a big Church Block labeled bottle in from of Wirra Wirra’s cellars – it’s enormous and looks fabulous!

Church Block was the first wine the late Greg Trott produced under the Wirra Wirra label back in 1972. He took the name from one of the original vineyards, which runs next to the small Bethany Church (est. 1854) across the road from Wirra Wirra’s century old ironstone cellars. Over four decades, the Church Block label has become an Australian favourite, consistently offering a smooth, soft red wine(…)” (back label)

Wirra Wirra Church Block 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Shiraz Merlot is a dark violet coloured wine with dark red hues. The aroma is intense and so rich, that I could pay just for smelling the wine! The bouquet consist of black currant, blackberry, black cherry notes with pure liquorice and distinct chocolate hints. There is also lot of spices in the aroma including cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg with very delicate aniseed that appears after a while of not stirring the wine in the glass ;)

In the mouth Church Block 2012 is very complex, harmonious and full of fruits. The acidity is quite lively, balanced with ripe fruits, solid structure and rich body. The tannins are smooth, well-integrated and rounded. On the palate the wine provides a nice diversity of fruit flavours, such as black forest fruits, black cherries, dark plums and a hint of blueberries. Apart from fruits, there are lots of woody, earthy and spicy notes. You will find cedar wood, some forest floor notes, sweet vanilla and subtle white pepper. The finish is long and lingering, full of blueberries and cherries and a hint of spices.
